Bodice-positive attitude reigns

If you’re into the Goth scene, you know that industrial and dark, introspective music by Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Cure and Joy Division are part of the culture, as are costumed looks involving elements of punk, Victorian fashion, pale facial makeup and dark hair. It’s an alternative crowd, to be sure, but not always the most welcoming to alternative body types, as Shawna Berry Davis, a 30-year-old dispatcher from Oakland, found. After nine years of trying to fit into the scene, she has created her own Goth community for people who look more like she does. It’s called Club Bodice, and is billed as the nation’s first pop-up club for plus-size people. The dance night (21 and over) is held one Sunday a month at the Stud, a noted gay bar in SoMa, and features snacks and entertainment for a $10 cover charge. There are also quarterly theme nights, like the next one on May 15 that promises a May Day-Renaissance flair. Davis explained the club’s evolution in a recent chat with Style.
